Light Winds

At Prism we strive to make kites that look as great as they fly. The new, limited edition Synthesis Super Ultralight sets a new benchmark for beauty in motion. Its iridescent Prismatex leading edge panels refract sunlight into a dazzling rainbow of colors unlike anything you’ve ever seen in a kite.

The SUL is a wing for experienced pilots who love the magic of light wind - when control is a subtle twitch of a wrist and nothing but a great ultralight will fly. This is the realm of graceful flat spins, effortless stalls and slides, and subtle fingertip control you can’t enjoy when your arms are getting stretched in a blow.

If you like your Synthesis then you’ll love its ultralight counterpart. The gossamer sail and wrapped, tapered Dynamic carbon frame weigh just 238 grams to soar effortlessly in just a whisper of wind. Like our other high-level designs, the standoffs and bridle geometry are adjustable so you can optimize performance for your flying style and conditions. The SUL shares all the design innovations we pioneered with the standard Synthesis, with subtle modifications to materials and geometry to reduce weight and optimize aerodynamics for light winds. And get ready to be amazed when the sun comes out - the Prismatex light show will captivate a crowd wherever you fly.

    Design Details

    • Ultra light materials weigh just 238 grams to fly in the lightest breezes.
    • Prismatex leading edge panels refract sunlight for a dazzling look on sunny days.
    • Lightweight 1/2 oz ripstop polyester sailcloth minimizes weight and won’t stretch or absorb moisture on humid days.
    • Dynamic tapered & wrapped carbon frame puts stiffness in the middle of the kite where you want it for performance and minimizes weight towards the wingtips for quick response.
    • Faceted leading edge with 6° ferrule bend combines the advantages of both high and low aspect ratio wings to add lift and precision.
    • Floating center-t provides a flexible spine connection to absorb shock and reduce spine breakage.
    • Adjustable bridle inhauls at center-t let you fine-tune turn radius and control response.
    • New APA leading edge connector fittings reduce weight, make assembly easier, and capture the bridle legs so fittings can’t get lost in the grass.
    • Adjustable standoffs allow precise control over wing twist to add or reduce lift when the wind changes.
    • Lightweight full-length sleeve won’t add bulk in your kite bag, snaps to half length, and includes a pocket for the upper spreader so it doesn’t get lost. Soft fleece lining protects the Prismatex panels.

    Flight Performance

Optimized for balance and precision, it goes exactly where you point it and locks in without oversteer after every turn. It loves flat, graceful axels and flat spins. Flick a wrist for locked-in stalls and slides across the entire window. Pop a fade in smooth wind and it’ll sit there all day. The outer standoffs are adjustable to control lift and speed in different winds, and the floating center T lets you set turn radius and pull to your flying style. But be advised: when the sun comes out you may ignore the tricks and just fly lazy circles around the sun, mesmerized by the dazzling Prismatex magic.

    What Is Prismatex?

Prismatex is a thin PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film specially engineered to refract light through microscopic grooves embossed in its surface. The grooves are formed in a geometric pattern that splits the sun’s rays into glittering flashes in all colors of the rainbow.

Prismatex was originally developed by renowned kite maker Stan Swanson, who works on our development team. He had a vision for a clear sail material that would celebrate the transparency of the air while turning kite motion into a dazzling light show. The film is incredibly light and thin—only 13 microns—but it’s super low stretch and plenty strong for a low-wind kite as long as you handle it with care. Just assemble your kite carefully and steer clear of puncture hazards like barnacles and brambles. If you do manage a puncture, don’t despair—we include a special crystal-clear adhesive repair film that won’t yellow from UV and makes an invisible fix.

Because this is a limited run, all stock will be kept in our warehouse in Seattle. You can place an order with your favorite dealer who will arrange for us to drop ship directly to you (US addresses only).

The fitting was inspired by jam cleats on racing sailboats. It lets you tune the length of the inner bridle legs to your flying style. To adjust just pull the release loop, slide the bridle through the fitting, and lock in a new setting. The soft connection between the T and the spine protects the spine from breakage in a crash.

Advanced pilots like to fine tune their kites for different winds and different moods. Slide the outer standoff fittings on the lower spreaders to change the lift, forward drive and precision for different conditions.

For sure. We have a full range of spares in stock to keep you flying for years to come.

Prismatex film is incredibly light and thin- only 13 microns. That’s roughly twice the thickness of the monofilm used in our iconic Vapor ultralight back in the 90’s. But it’s super low stretch and plenty strong for a low wind kite as long as you handle it with care. Just assemble your kite carefully, avoid strong winds and steer clear of puncture hazards like barnacles and brambles.
